The Two-Week Test: How to Know if a Project Can Build Momentum
Every founder has a project that's been sitting there for months. The rebrand. The new hire. The grant application. The systems overhaul. You know it matters. You keep meaning to get to it. And somehow another month goes by as you fight a million other fires.
Here's a simple test to find out whether that project is actually going to happen, or whether you're just hoping it will.
Start with five questions
Pull out the stuck project you want to tackle first. Answer these, in writing:
What's the project? Describe it in one sentence.
What does "done" look like? Be specific.
Who owns it? Not who's working on it. Who's accountable?
What's the real barrier? Dig under the surface.
What are the next three concrete actions? Keep them small.
Then give yourself two weeks
Now you've got three concrete actions. Put them on the calendar. Commit to finishing all three in the next fourteen days.
That's the test.
If two weeks pass and two of the three steps aren't done, you need to bring in someone who can move things forward and build momentum. It is unlikely that the project will get done on its own unless something changes within the existing systems.
That's not a failure of discipline. It's a diagnostic.
What the result actually means
There are two main reasons a project stays stuck after the two-week test.
Clarity. The questions were harder to answer than you expected, and the "next three steps" you wrote down weren't actually the next three steps. That's solvable. Go back, dig deeper, and try again with better inputs.
Capacity. You had the right answers and couldn't execute anyway. That means the project won't happen unless something changes. Either you take something else off your plate, or you hand this project to someone who has the bandwidth to help finish it with your limited resources.
Try it this week
Pick your most urgent stuck project right now. Give yourself fifteen minutes with the five questions. Then start the two-week clock.
If the project still doesn't move, that's useful information too. It means it's time to get help, reassign it, or admit it's not actually a priority and close it out.
